It's the question every Australian points collector faces: Qantas Frequent Flyer or Velocity? Both programs have loyal fans, genuine sweet spots, and frustrating weaknesses. Instead of picking a side, we ran the numbers.

The quick answer

There's no single winner. Qantas is better for international premium cabin redemptions and has a bigger domestic network. Velocity wins on transfer partner flexibility and often offers cheaper domestic redemptions. The smart move is to use both strategically.

Points value comparison

Sweet spot valueUp to 4c+Up to 3.5c+
Points Plus Pay value~0.5c (avoid)~0.7 - 0.9c (avoid)

Both programs took hits in 2025. Qantas devalued Classic Rewards 10-20% in August, while Velocity raised prices up to 30% in January. As of 2026, Velocity points are slightly more valuable per-point according to community valuations, mainly because Velocity domestic redemptions remain cheaper. But Qantas still reaches higher peaks through oneworld partner awards.

Here's what each program charges for business class, one-way:

Both programs devalued in 2025. Qantas increased Classic Reward rates 10-20% in August 2025. Velocity raised reward seat prices up to 30% in January 2025 and cut flight earning from 5 to 4 points per dollar in April 2025. The numbers below reflect current (2026) pricing.

The real picture:Velocity wins domestic and trans-Pacific. Qantas wins Asia and Europe. Neither program is universally cheaper — which is exactly why the smart strategy is to use both. Also note: Velocity's SYD→LHR used to be 95,000 via Etihad, but that partnership ended in June 2025. The cheapest Velocity option to London is now Qatar at 158,500.

Partner networks

Qantas Frequent Flyer

  • oneworld alliance — Cathay Pacific, JAL, Qatar, BA, American, Malaysian, etc. Massive global coverage.
  • Emirates partnership — Unique to Qantas. Book Emirates flights with QFF points (though at high surcharges).
  • Strong for Asia, Middle East, and trans-Pacific via partner awards.

Velocity Frequent Flyer

  • Singapore Airlines— The jewel of the Velocity network. Book SQ's excellent product, and Qatar releases availability to Velocity 330 days out vs. only 119 days for Qantas.
  • Qatar Airways — Access to Q-Suites and Doha connections to Europe/Africa.
  • ANA, United, Air Canada, Virgin Atlantic — Decent global coverage, though not as comprehensive as oneworld.
Etihad partnership ended June 2025.This was a significant loss for Velocity — the cheap SYD→LHR via Abu Dhabi route at 95,000 points is gone. The cheapest Velocity Europe option is now Qatar at 158,500 points.

Earning rates

Credit cards

Both programs have extensive credit card partnerships in Australia:

  • Amex — Partners with both (separate cards). Also offers Membership Rewards that can transfer to either program.
  • Big four banks — ANZ, CBA, Westpac, NAB all have cards earning Qantas or Velocity points. Qantas generally has more card partnerships.

Edge: Qantas — more credit card options and retail earning partners through the Qantas Shopping portal.

Flying

  • Qantas uses distance-based earning with a minimum points guarantee — even cheap sale fares earn 800-1,000+ points. From July 2025, members earn up to 25% more on domestic flights.
  • Velocitymoved to revenue-based earning: 4 points per $1 spent (down from 5, as of April 2025). Cheap sale fares earn very little compared to Qantas's minimum guarantee.

Edge: Qantas — broader airline earning network and better earn rates on discounted fares. Velocity can beat Qantas on expensive business class fares where per-dollar earning adds up.

Edge: Qantas for value, Velocity for accessibility. Qantas Gold gives you access to 650+ lounges worldwide via oneworld — vastly superior for international travel. But it costs 2-3x more to earn than Velocity Gold. Velocity also introduced Forever Gold status for long-term loyalty.

Points expiry

  • Qantas: Points expire after 18 months of inactivity. Any earn or burn resets the clock.
  • Velocity: Points expire after 24 months of inactivity. Slightly more generous.

Edge: Velocity — 6 months extra buffer, though both are easy to keep alive with regular activity.

The verdict: use both

The Australian points community overwhelmingly recommends holding both programs and using each for its strengths:

Use Qantas for...Use Velocity for...
Asia business class (SIN, HKG via partners)Domestic business class (3,800 pts cheaper)
Europe via Emirates or oneworldUS via United (102K vs 128K)
Round-the-world awardsSingapore Airlines bookings
oneworld lounge access with statusEasier/cheaper status for domestic perks
Availability matters more than price. Community consensus: Velocity consistently offers better award seat availability, especially on Singapore Airlines and Qatar. Qatar releases business seats to Velocity 330 days out vs. only 119 days for Qantas — a massive advantage for planning.
Byron's verdict:Don't be a loyalist — be an opportunist. Earn Amex Membership Rewards as your core currency (it transfers to both programs), then move points to whichever program offers the best deal for your specific trip. That's the whole philosophy behind PointsPilot.
